Why Priority Registration?

Why is Baltimore Witchfest offering priority registration to trans, nonbinary, and BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color)?

Baltimore Witchfest is being hosted by the Baltimore Reclaiming community. We are a part of the wider Reclaiming tradition. Our statement of values, the Principles of Unity, state that:

We work for all forms of justice: environmental, social, political, racial, gender and economic. Our feminism includes a radical analysis of power, seeing all systems of oppression as interrelated, rooted in structures of domination and control.

We acknowledge that both historically and currently, persons who are gender nonconforming and persons who are BIPOC face systemic oppression and unequal access to services in their communities. We know that the witchcraft and pagan community SPECIFICALLY has done and continues to do harm to gender nonconforming and BIPOC people.

We seek justice. Extending priority registration is a recognition of the power that access holds. This is the same reason we offer a sliding scale payment system and have some scholarship tickets available, as we similarly seek to weave a spell of economic justice and expand access to those who have faced economic oppression.

Our extension of priority registration to these groups is not a statement on the validity of the struggle that anyone else has faced or continue to face in their own lives.
